Spiritual Psychology is not about god

Maybe you read in the therapy section of our site that I work from a Spiritual Psychology framework. I’ll be honest, finding the words for this kind of approach is hard. Spiritual. What does that even mean? For me that word is about a connection to something that feels greater than all this, greater than the lifetime that we spend on earth. It’s that framework that I use to make sense of this world, why I’m here, what does it all mean? You know those easy questions that humans have pondered since our brains developed the ability to ponder.
Spirituality can also carry those heavy words like faith, ritual, religion... I know that for many people religion is the pathway to spirituality. It provides us with a community of other humans who have faith in the same thing, the same system for understanding, for structure, for guidance. For other people the path of organized religion just didn’t seem to fit, and we’re out here just trying to figure it out. Or maybe we’re not and we ignore it for as long as we can. No matter which spiritual path we’re on, it’s not easy. None of them are a guarantee to happiness and we will never know the answers for sure. Oof! So what does this have to do with therapy?
To oversimplify things, it’s the challenge or it’s a resource. When it’s the challenge, we can stay right here and know that we’re not alone in this challenge. It’s been a challenge for the people before us and it will be for the people after us. So therapy is a place for support as we navigate the ups and downs, chaos and stillness of being a human.
When considering it as a resource, I like to ask how do you connect with Spirit/the Divine/God/the Universe/Something greater? What’s that relationship like? If you’ve got that relationship, let’s bring it into the therapy room. Incorporating spiritual support and connection into therapy can be incredibly healing. It’s a reminder that you’re not alone, it can help contextualize perspective, and it can be an intuitive resource for your growth.
If you don’t know; you don’t have that relationship, are you interested or curious? In supporting the cultivation of that connection, I rely heavily on your intuition and innate capacity for healing. This involves connecting in with the wisdom of your body, moving into theta brainwave states, and allowing your conscious, analytical mind to rest.
So… how do you connect with Spirit/the Divine/God/the Universe/Something greater?
